In Aotearoa New Zealand we work with different institutions and communities to support the bi-cultural foundations of this country through meaningful and inclusive social-ecological interventions. We wholeheartedly support the vision of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and believe that it needs to be the necessary driving force behind any future social and/or ecological action. This was one of the founding elements of Tohu and continues to be powerfully embodied by our Māori team members. Over the years we have worked with a variety of different projects and institutions (Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, Te Weu Charitable Trusts, Institute of Kāika Climate Resilience) which include:
Developing an Anti-Racism Manifesto for Tertiary educational institutions
Developing a Climate Decision Support Tool to help Māori communities engage meaningfully with top-down climate action projects
Developing a Maladaptation Assessment Tool to help rural and Māori communities monitor and evaluate the probable negative impacts of climate adaptation projects
Develop guiding principles for Iwi (tribal) management plans and more universally implemented Indigenous Planning practices
- Support Māori youth engagement with international climate events (e.g. COP) and support their educational and research activities through collaboration, network building and mentorship
In Australia we work with the Institute for the Study of Development Worldwide on a variety of topics related to climate action, just transitions, meaningful development and the future of community focused interventions across Asia and the Pacific.
